Switch Type

   Switch Type
   Your choices are...

   DIP Switch

A DIP (Dual In-line Package) switch is an electronic package (circuit board) consisting of a series of tiny switches. Typically used in the configuration of computers and computer peripherals (for example, circuit boards, modems etc.).

   Dome Switch

Dome switches are tactile switches under a rubber bubble or dome.  When the switch is pressed it collapses the dome and makes the switch contact. Dome switches are commonly used in keywords and membrane keypads. They are generally fairly quiet when operated, so are a good choice for office and consumer environments.

   Key lock Switch

Key lock switches have a key as the means of activation. The key is turned in a circle, and can stop in several positions in its range.

   Keyswitch

Keyswitches are tactile mechanical switches designed for keyboards and Keypads.  They are designed to give the user sensory or tactile feedback that the button or switch has made contact with the control panel beneath, usually a printed circuit board.

   Pushbutton Switch

Pushbutton switches are mechanical switch that are defined by the method used to activate the switch. The activation method is typically in the form of a plunger that is pushed down to open or close the switch.

   Reed Switch

Reed switches are magnetically activated switches. Typically manufactured with two ferromagnetic reeds (contact blades), which are sealed in a glass capsule. In the presence of a magnet, the blades (contacts) close.

   Rocker Switch

Rocker actuators are familiar in many on-off switches; they rock or pivot about the centerline, and include both maintained and momentary contact types.

   Rotary Coded DIP Switch

Rotary coded DIP switches are activated by means of a rotating shaft that can have several stop positions. For each position of the shaft (the input) the switch generates an output binary code.

   Rotary Switch

Rotary switches move in a circle, and can stop in several positions along its range.

   Slide Switch

This switch is a slider that moves linearly (slides) from position to position.

   Snap Action Switch

Snap action switches are mechanical switches that produce a very rapid transfer of contacts from one position to another. They are useful in situations that require a fast opening or closing of a circuit, such as a mouse button or appliance setting.

   Tact Switch

Tact switches are tactile electromechanical switches designed for keyboard, keypad, instruments or interface control panel applications.  They are designed to give the user sensory or tactile feedback that the button or switch has made contact with the control panel beneath, usually a printed circuit board.

   Touch-sensitive Switch

Touch-sensitive switches operate by human touch, as opposed to making or breaking a mechanical connection by pushing a button or flipping a switch.  Many different principles can be used to operate a touch-sensitive switch, including temperature, resistance, radio reception, acoustic resonance dampening, or capacitance.  Touch-sensitive switches typically do not provide any tactile feedback.

   Toggle Switch

This switch has a toggle that moves or swings to make or break the circuit; includes maintained contact and momentary contact types.

   Your choices are...

   Single Pole, Single Throw (SPST)

Single pole, single throw switches makes or breaks the connection of a single conductor in a single branch circuit. This switch typically has two terminals. It is commonly referred to as a "Single-Pole" Switch.

   Single Pole, Double Throw (SPDT)

Single pole, double throw switches are makes or breaks the connection of a single conductor with either of two other single conductors. This switch typically has 3 terminals, and is commonly used in pairs and called a "Three-Way" switch.

   Double Pole, Single Throw (DPST)

Double pole, single throw switches makes or breaks the connection of two circuit conductors in a single branch circuit. This switch typically has four terminals.

   Double Pole, Double Throw (DPDT)

Double pole, double throw switches makes or breaks the connection of two conductors to two separate circuits. This switch typically has six terminals and is available in both momentary and maintained contact versions.

   Specialty / Other Type

Special throw types with more than 2 poles, such as switches designed to split loads into separate circuits (e.g., headlamp switches).

Switch Function

   Switch Function
   Your choices are...

   Maintained Contact

In maintained contact functions, the actuator stays in thrown position. This includes on-off, but it also includes Three-Position - (Center-off) and Three Position - (No Center-off) switches where the switch remains in its actuated position.

   Momentary Contact

When a switch has momentary contact it must be held in position and reverts to normal position when actuating force is removed.

   Alternating Contact

Alternating contact switches have an alternation action such as push on, push off.

Configuration

   Configuration
   Your choices are...

   Normally Open (NO)

Normally open switch configurations have contacts that are open or disconnected in their normal position.

   Normally Closed (NC)

Normally closed contacts closed or connected in their when in their (normal) position.
