Cable Protectors

Cable protectors cover wires, cables, hose or pipe in high traffic areas to protect them from damage. There are many different types of products. Examples include cable sleeves, cable channels, cable covers, cable ramps, and wire looms. Cable sleeves are made of natural or synthetic materials and are used to protect hydraulic, pneumatic, and thermally-insulated hoses and cables. These cable protectors are suitable for marine, industrial, and transportation applications. Cable channels are made of durable, load-bearing materials and are designed to protect multiple cables. Cord covers and cable covers are suitable for light-duty applications. Cable ramps are designed to support foot traffic and comply with accessibility requirements from the American with Disabilities Act (ADA). Wire looms are used to strengthen lengths of wire, hose and cable. They are often corrugated and made from fire resistant materials. Other unlisted, proprietary, and specialized cable protectors and cable protection systems are also available.

Selecting cable protectors requires an analysis of product specifications and features. Cable sleeves are often made of polyamide, polyester and polypropylene materials. They vary in terms of density, inner diameter (ID), outer diameter (OD), minimum working temperature, and maximum working temperature. Specifications for cable channels include length, width, and height; number of channels, height per channel, and width per channel; maximum load capacity, color, and hinge-pin materials. Colors for cable channels include red, blue, yellow, black, and orange. Hinge-pins are made of fiberglass. Cord covers and cable covers are sold in standard lengths and vary in terms of width and height. Cable ramps are made of durable, abrasion-resistant plastic materials and are designed to support foot traffic and/or automobiles. Wire looms are made of flexible, flame retardant nylon or polypropylene and come in colors such as black, gray, and safety yellow. Reflective wire looms resist heat distortion and are suitable for confined, high-temperature environments.

Cable surge protectors are specialized cable protectors that include electrical outlets and fax/modem protection. The number of outlets, number of phone jacks, output power capacity, and surge rating are important specifications to consider. Like other cable protectors, cable surge protectors conform to National Electric Code (NEC) requirements and published standards for safety from Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
