About Current Sources

Current sources provide reliable current levels for electrical component testing and for powering specialized components such as lasers. Current (or power) levels will remain constant during variation of load impedance. Current sources are used in a wide variety of test applications such as relays, circuit breakers, satellite components, and power meters.  Current source styles include PCB mount, printed circuit board or card mount, laboratory bench or portable configuration, rack mount, DIN rail mount, and freestanding or cabinet mount.

The most important specifications to consider when searching for current sources are the output specifications.  These include AC current, DC current, current phase, output current, output voltage, and output power.  A source with AC current has at least one output providing alternating current.  A source with DC output has at least one output providing direct current.  A single phase current has one alternating signal.  A three-phase current has three signals of current, typically 120° out of phase with each other.  The output current is the required full range of current output.  The output voltage is the maximum required voltage output.  The output power is the required rated power of the current source.

Products & Services Related to Current Sources

AC-DC Adapters
AC-DC adapters accept AC input voltage directly from a wall outlet, and output DC voltage.
DC Power Systems
DC power systems provide continuous DC power through multiple outputs.  Most DC power systems include a battery backup, temperature compensation, and other features.
High Voltage Power Supplies
High voltage power supplies use linear technology to provide one or more DC outputs at voltage levels of hundreds or thousands of volts.
Medical Power Supplies
Medical power supplies produce conditioned outputs for medical devices, instruments, and equipment.
Power Rectifiers
Power rectifiers are electrical devices that convert alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). They are an integral part of telecom rectifiers for the telecommunications industry, and in battery chargers, DC power systems, and other power system devices.
Power Supplies
Power supplies are devices that produce AC or DC power.  This grouping includes current sources, DC power supplies, AC-DC adapters, DC-DC converters, AC power sources, and DC-AC inverters.
Programmable Power Supplies
Programmable power supplies are digitally controlled power sources that provide accurate and adjustable levels of voltage, current, and frequency. They include a processor, voltage/current programming circuits, current shunt, and voltage/current read-back circuits.
