Magnetic Separator Components

Magnetic separation is a filtration process in which ferromagnetic or paramagnetic particles are removed from a process line.  The process is achieved by applying an electrical current to a wire mesh or matrix, thereby inducing a magnetic field.  When a solution or gas is passed through the mesh, any magnetic particles are attracted to the focus of the magnetic field and are filtered out of the flow.  There are five main magnetic separation component types: magnetic grates, plate magnets, magnetic traps, magnetic drums, and magnetic pulleys.

Magnetic grates are used to remove ferrous tramp metal in bins, chutes, drawers, hoppers, and circular enclosures.  Typical uses include removing metallic grit from hydraulic reservoirs, and installation in gravity-fed vertical chutes, hoppers, housings, surge or catch bins. They are easy to install, and provide efficient, economical magnetic protection of processing equipment such as: milling extruding, molding, and mixing machinery from damage caused by tramp metal.

Plate magnets remove tramp metal when used in above-the-flow chute and belt applications.   Plate magnets are designed for use in gravity-fed angled chutes, which convey low to high volume product streams.  They are able to perform whether installed above or below the process flow.

Magnetic traps are designed to filter product flow lines and pumps by removing ferrous contaminants from the products flow stream. Trap magnets are used to purify liquids and for tramp metal separation for a variety of wet food processing industries, including chemical, food processing, and paper mill industries, from fluid and strained product flows, to viscous and heavy fibrous product streams.

Magnetic drums attract and hold tramp iron inside closed chutes, beyond the discharge of the cleaned product flow.  They are composed of a stationary permanent magnet enclosed in a nonmagnetic stainless-steel drum.  Product flow is diverted so that it falls onto the top and flows across the surface of the drum.  Ferrous matter contained in the product flow is drawn to the drum's surface (and held against it) by the powerful magnet housed inside.   Drum separators can be provided as the drum only or as a complete assembly with the housing and drive included. 

Magnetic pulleys are used on belt conveyors to provide maximum continuous protection against tramp iron contamination in the processing of materials such as chemicals, plastics, grains, food products, ceramics and coal.  This method of magnetic separation requires that the pulley be installed at the discharge end of the conveyor.  As the mixture of product and ferrous metal travels over the pulley and reaches the drop-off point, the product falls freely from the end of the line into storage bins or processing chutes.  Any ferrous metal that is mixed in with the product is attracted and held to the face of the belt and carried to the underside of the pulley.
