Medical Connectors

Medical connectors are used in all aspects of the medical profession: in hospitals, clinics, and other centers; they are specially designed and constructed to protect patients and hospital personnel. These connectors may also be used to distributing medication to a patient in a safe, convenient way.

Medical connectors work in the same way as normal connectors; the difference in both lays in the quality of workmanship, types of materials used, standards by which the connectors should be subjected, and care of used. 

There are different types of medical connectors, which should be chosen depending on the application. Some types of medical connectors include fiber-optic connectors, coaxial, fluid, gas, high voltage, high current, rectangular, and circular. Other types of medical connectors may also be available. 

Important features for medical connectors include a locking device. Locking connection mechanisms provide fast, secure connections, often distinguishable feedback to confirm that the medical connector is engaged. Some medical connectors offer up to 27, 52, or 78 contacts and can be configured with usage limiters and/or proprietary keying options for protecting single-use connectors from being copied of adjoined with the wrong connector.

Small-scale medical connectors have becoming increasingly popular, and now miniature or nano-sized connectors can be integrated into the design of medical instruments in early design stages. Connectors can now be built into handles, probes, or custom-mounted into instruments, which allows a better fit for most instruments.

Chemical-resistant plastic housing is an option for medical connectors. The housing typically comes in different colors, which make for ease detection and identification. Housings for medical connectors are typically waterproof to resist steam, EtO, and gamma sterilization. Medical connectors often have customization options for specific applications including modeling houses, cable yokes, strain reliefs, and embedded cable intelligence. Other options for medical connectors may also be available.
