About Fibre Channel Connectors

Fibre Channel connectors are high-speed devices used in Fibre Channel systems. They are designed for telecommunications, video, networking, and storage area network (SAN) applications. Fibre Channel is a high-speed, serial-data transfer architecture that uses links of copper or optical cable to achieve speeds measured in the gigabit (GB) range. The most popular Fibre Channel standard is Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL), a network topology which can support full-duplex data transfer rates of 100 MBps. Specifications for Fibre Channel connectors include gender, voltage rating, current rating, number of contacts, and operating temperature. Male Fibre Channel connectors or plugs mate with female Fibre Channel connectors or jacks. Voltage rating is the maximum operating voltage. Current rating is the maximum, recommended, continuous flow of electrical current. If an approval organization defines a maximum voltage or maximum current that differs from the supplier’s maximums, check with the supplier for specific usage details. The number of contacts in a Fibre Channel connector is the number of number of conductive elements that mate with a corresponding element to provide an electrical path.

There are many different types of Fibre Channel connectors. D-Subminiature (D-sub) connectors have a mating face that is shaped like the letter "D". This shape provides polarization since D-shaped male and female connectors fit together in only one way. Gigabit interface converters (GBIC) are transceivers that convert between serial-electrical and serial-optical signals for high-speed networking. They are used with both Fibre Channel and Gigabit Ethernet networks. Media interface adapters (MIA) are Fibre Channel connectors that convert DB9 copper signals into optical signals, and vice versa. High-speed serial data connection (HSSDC) cable connectors are designed to facilitate gigabit-per-second (Gbit/sec) data transmissions. HSSDC2 connectors are an improved version of the original HSSDC cable connector and are designed to facilitate Gbit/sec data transmissions. Triax connectors are used with triaxial cables where maximum RF shielding and minimum noise radiation is required. Twinax connectors are used with twinaxial cables for balanced low level and high sensitivity circuits. Twinax connectors feature polarized key and keyway construction as well as threaded coupling.

Products & Services Related to Fibre Channel Connectors

Coaxial Connectors
Coaxial connectors are composed of an insulated central conducting wire wrapped in another cylindrical conductor (the shield). The cable is usually wrapped in another insulating layer and an outer protective layer. Coaxial cables and connectors have the capacity to carry vast quantities of information. They are typically used in high-speed data and CATV applications.
Edge Card Connectors
Edge card connectors are edge-on connectors designed for single-sided or double-sided printed circuit boards (PCBs).
Gender Changers
Gender changers are devices that change the end of a cable into another type, allowing two cable assemblies with the same or different genders to mate.
Heavy Duty Rectangular Connectors
Heavy duty rectangular connectors are designed to accommodate large electrical loads and direct signals under a multitude of operating conditions.
Military (MIL-SPEC) Connectors
Military (MIL-SPEC) connectors are built in accordance with military specifications. Their design takes into account the need to protect the connection from environmental factors, allowing them to be used in military and aerospace applications.
Modular Connectors and RJ Connectors
Modular connectors and RJ connectors are plug-in units used in many networking and telecommunications applications. Registered jack (RJ) connectors are a type of modular connector, which often have protective capabilities such as integrated filters to protect against unwanted signals or some type of magnetics to provide filtering, signal conditioning, and isolation.
USB Connectors
USB connectors are used with universal serial bus (USB) ports. They can be used to connect USB products together, or to connect USB wires and peripherals to other standard port types.
